Here's Episode 1's Synopsis:
"Child of Fate"
On February 7th 1189, Minamoto no Yos-hitune, the commander of the Genji troops looks down at the Heike’s camp from the top of the cliff, waiting to make a surprise attack on the Heike troops, a sworn enemy of Yos-hitsune. Among the Heike’s commanders, however, there are Taira no Munemori, Tomomori and Shigehira, whom Yos-hitsune used to play with in his childhood as if they were brothers…
In December 1159, the Genji clan, which has once prospered in Kyoto with its head Minamoto no Yos-hitomo, is defeated by the Heike clan in the battle of Heiji. Tokiwa, a much-loved mistress of Yos-hitomo and mother of Yos-hitsune, escapes from Kyoto and wanders in the snow with her three children. The head of the Heike clan, Taira no Kiyomori is asked by his step mother, Ikenozenni to save the life of Yos-hitsune’s half brother Minamoto no Yoritomo who was captured after the Genji's defeat. Tokiwa returns to Kyoto, hearing that her mother was captured by the Heike as one related to the Genji, and appeals Kiyomori for mercy to save her mother and sons in exchange for her own life. Kiyomori, who lost his own mother when he was a child, sees Ushiwaka (Yos-hitsune’s childhood name) who is held in Tokiwa’s arms, and makes a decision.

Matsudaira Ken was in the just ended Chushingura as Oshi(sp) the retainer and avenger of his Lord. He was also in the Taiga Drama about Chushingura titled Genroku Ryoran, though not in a leading role. Someone in another post mentioned something about "Yoshi-tsune" actor, at the start of this tread.

that character from Chushingura is named Oishi and Takizawa Hideaki plays the adult Yoshi-tsune.

I was wondering that too. But I'm pretty sure I heard Kiyomori tell tokiwa when he makes his final "judgment" that her mother had just died. So they never really showed her mother at all.

Not bad, not bad last night's first episode . . . you just KNEW they had to show a war general Yo****sune to treat the Taki fans (couldn't help but notice the preview of upcoming shows present sweaty, shirtless Taki [I mean, objectively speaking, nighttime shot of Taki with the moonlight accentuating his sweaty back is more for the Taki than it serves the Yo****sune faithful]; Taki playing flute [to show his sensitive side]; and Taki in different style of clothing; Taki practicing fencing in front of the tengu he supposedly learned from; yawn, how obligatory; OK, OK, OK, don't hit me, fans of Taki) to start everything off, even though Yo****omo's story is a great starting point for any production regarding Yo****sune.
But, I gotta say so far it's faithful to the Yo****sune tale, from what I know at least. Looking forward to this one. Lotta star power. Man, you'd think Matsudaira Ken's next role'd be comedy (no, I DON'T count Matsuken Samba) or playing a serial killer or something, but, guess he's in this samurai show for now. AND let's not forget KIKU-TV's airing of Chushingura. Cripes, why quit Abarenbo Shogun, then?
Oh, by the way, what the preview did for me? Got to see cute face Ueto Aya, yes, yes, looking forward to her being in my living room on Tuesday and/or Sunday nights. They shoulda' just re-wrote the story so that she can be Azumi in Yo****sune.

Kashu Toshiki plays Taira no Koremori (who hasn't been shown yet)...heheheeh, as if I don't get enough of him in Hagure Keiji 16...but YAY!!
Lots of popular actors...!
Which Johnny's Jr. is in this one? Last time it was the drummer for TOKIO in Musashi (Sasaki Kojiro)...?

Great actors and actresses in this new show Y O S H I T S U N E.
One thing I noticed about this show...one particular word they are using as stepmother seems to be a modern Half-English word "Mamahaha"...at least I thought Mamahaha was a 1/2 English 1/2 Japanese word... When narrator used it first, I thought they are using it to be understood easier for the viewing public, but when I heard actors using it too, I thought that was odd...and interesting. Unless Mamahaha is an ancient Japanese word which I didn't know the origin ....well, I thought since the word mama was in it, I thought it was 1/2 English word...what do you think?
I like the show already :D

Kiyoshi_Enkaness! - It's Takizawa Hideaki, who plays the adult Yos-hitune.
Naomi - You could sort of consider them a singing group, like Morning Musume. The members are from the talent agency Johnny's Jimusho, also responsible for SMAP, Tokio, Kinki Kids, V6, Arashi ... there's probably more. I forgot how many boys are a part of the group.

The word you've mentioned is not some mix between Japanese and English. It's completely Japanese.
(You'll need Japanese viewing software to see the characters.)
[Śp] is MAMA. [•ę] is HAHA.
Put them both together and you get 'Mamahaha' or 'stepmother'. (Although the characters can also be pronounced Keibo too.)
Surely it would be very strange for them to use something in English during a time when the language was mostly unknown in Japan. ^_~

Thank you Reiko...it is amazing that this Japanese word has the word "Mama" in it...what a coincidence it is....to have that word in it to describe stepMOTHER. Funny thing about it is, many of us grew up in Japan thinking it was a mix-up word.
Thank you again Reiko.

I love the drama already, and I believe it can only get better. Hehehe. I'm super excited to see what unfolds.
TOKIO!!!! I recently fell in love with their music, and realized that their "leader" (Joshima Shigeru) played a detective on Hagure Keiji (Yamaoka-san) for a long time (until they killed him, sad...)...
...I make more and more connections with the more dramas I watch, like Saito Shota playing Haiji on Hotman and Imai Tadashi on Kinpachi Sensei. ^_^;;
Great stuff! Woooo! I think I'm a die-hard Taiga Drama fan now. ^_^
