This probably comes up once in awhile but does anyone know if "Kaze Kozo" (the B&W tv show that was on in the early sixties in Hawaii) is available in some format (Tape/dvd/laser)?

| I'd like to know that, too. While I lived in Japan, none of my Japanese friends knew about that series. I "fell in love" with Yamashiro Shingo with that series, but everybody tried to tell me I must have mistaken the series with Hakuba Doji, which I think was a later series. Also, I never found anything on it in the video shops. |

| My parents have been begging me to find Kaze Kozo for years now, but haven't been able to find anything :( And since we're talking about old television series, does anyone know if there are DVD's of Fuefuki Doji? |

there used to be shown in theaters late '50's ( for me anyway when I first saw it ) to '60's, a series ( maybe more than the one I saw ) on kaze kozo type magic jidaigeki chambara ninja type series. they were short 15 mins or something episodes that were shown before the main feature, like how cartoons used to be shown in theaters. Anybody remember and would you please 'talk story' about them?!
It could have been Sarutobi Sasuke!?

Concerning Sarutobi Sassuke, I think that was only shown on tv. It starred Sawamura Seisho.
He was one of the brothers in the 1959 movie version of Satomi Hakkenden which starred Satomi Kotaro who recently appeared on tv in Yato. |

Concerning that 15-minute episodic thing you mentioned, that may have been GOLDEN PEACOCK CASTLE (1961, "Ogon Kujaku Jo") which on its initial release was shown in 4 separate parts. I think it was Shingo Yamashiro's first movie:

Concerning SAWAMURA, his name was SEISHIRO.
With regard to GOLDEN PEACOCK CASTLE, each of the 4 parts was shown separately as a double-feature with another movie.
So it took at least a month to see all 4 parts because a movie-bill would run for a week before it was replaced with a new movie-bill. |

I remember seeing that the episode number was in the double digits and the film was not color but in sepia type black and white film. And I didn't think then that I could have thought anybody in the film as someone I knew. The area where I lived was near the 3 Japanese theaters by Aala Park - River Street, The Toho, Kakusai(sp), and another maybe Toei or is Kakusai Toei one and the same? I went to the movies around there a lot including the American theaters, the Liberty, the King, the Hawaii and the Princess, in downtown Honolulu and the Aikahi(sp?) near Ala Park. TV then was too new to have been a replacement for the movies, that is, not until the middle '60's, as it were for me anyway. Anyway, I vaguely remember now that the series was about Kaze Kozo and not Sarutobi Sasuke which I remember was a movie.

Near Aala Park, there used to be a TOYO THEATER that used to show first-run movies from the TOEI movie company.
The other theater in Honolulu that showed first-run TOEI movies was KAPAHULU THEATER.
Sometimes, the old downtown PRINCESS THEATER would show first-run TOEI movies. |

| Getting back to GOLDEN PEACOCK CASTLE, it was in color, not black-and-white. |

By the way, is YAMASHIRO SHINGO still alive?
After starting his career making KAZE KOZO and chambara movies, didn't he become a comedian and tv personality? |

| Concerning KAZE KOZO, at about the same time it was shown on tv, there was another tv series about USHIWAKA MARU which starred KITAOJI KIN'YA who is now starring in OOKA ECHIZEN. |

I've seen maybe 1 of the movies at the theater when I was a kid I think and have seen most of the others though not completely on NGN3. The 15 mins. short, theater-shown, episodes were in black and white sepia colored film. |
