Episode Summary

The time is the fourth year of Tenbun (1535). Yamamoto Kansuke [Uchino Masaaki], who at the time still called himself Obayashi Kansuke, passed his time as a ronin, wandering through the various provinces in order to master the art of war tactics. Ending his fifteen year journey, Kansuke returns to his birthplace of Mikawa to succeed as head of his family and meets a peasant girl named Mitsu [Kanjiya Shihori] and Heizo [Sato Ryuuta] in a deserted village called Kuzukasa in Kai province. At this time, Shingen's father Takeda Nobutora [Nakadai Tatsuya] was finally successful in unifying Kai together while extending his influence by wars with the Imagawa in Suruga and the Hojo in Sagami.

The conflict between the Takeda and Imagawa involves the farmers as well and Kuzukasa Village is attacked by the Imagawa soldiers. To rescue Mitsu, Kansuke intensely battles a masked man [Terajima Susumu], who later escapes but not before Kansuke incurs his enmity. The masked man was actually a Takeda vassal disguised as an Imagawa soldier.

Meanwhile, while the main force of the Takeda army was confronting the Imagawa, Hojo Ujiyasu [Matsui Makoto] in Sagami invades Kai. Accepting the challenge, Itagaki Nobukata [Chiba Sonichi] leads the Takeda soldiers into a battle with the Hojo army as Kansuke watches. Mitsu, who had followed Kansuke, is captured by the Takeda soldiers...

Seems like this is going to be a pretty good show. The first episode seems better than most other Taiga if my memory serves.

Kazan crippled by polio as a child can never be a leader so it seems he makes extraordinary efforts to gain more knowledge than his rivals. Musashi also sought to be a strategist but from fighting with his sword. Shingen (Harunobu?) values knowledge but real knowledge comes from seeing with your own eyes as Kazan said so Kazan has 15 years of real knowledge gained from wandering around the country. Akabe the (Takeda?) strategist that Kazan killed also had considerable first hand knowledge but was lacking in character and was pretty fairly defeated by Kazan but even Mitsu beat Akabe with a trick. Nobutora killed Akabe's(?) assistants when Akabe went missing without leave since Nobutora himself was getting information from a spy and Akabe would simply be suspected and not trusted by other samurai, especially those who want Akabe's job. Anyway Akabe wasn't that good anyway but I wonder if Nobutora knew that?

Episode Summary

For the first time in fifteen years, Kansuke [Uchino Masaaki] returns to Ushikubo in Mikawa, determined to succeed the family inheritance of the Obayashi by presenting the head of a Takeda general. Originally, Kansuke was born as the second son of the Yamamoto family in Suruga, a ji-samurai clan. When he was twelve, his true parents wanted him to be a priest, which he opposed. Obayashi Kanzaemon [Sasano Takashi] took pity on him and took Kansuke in as heir to the Obayashi family. However, when he returned, Kansuke found that a natural son had been born to his adoptive parents, while he was treated as a parasite. Leaving the Obayashi family, Kansuke announces that he will thereafter call himself Yamamoto Kansuke and heads towards Suruga.

In Suruga, his maternal uncle Ibara Tadatane [Ishibashi Renji] was serving the Imagawa as one of their chief retainers. Kansuke hoped that he could act as an intermediary in order for him to be able to work for them as well. After returning, he reunites with his elder brother Yamamoto Sadahisa [Mitsuishi Ken] and finds out that Sadahisa is serving Kushima Echizen no Kami [Teri Ito], a Imagawa vassal. Kansuke recalls a rumor he heard that said Kushima was secretly in communication with the Takeda to betray the Imagawa and is concerned about his elder brother's welfare. Yet Sadahisa replies that it was impossible for Kushima to be in secret communication with the Takeda.

Meanwhile, the antagonism between the head of the Takeda family, Takeda Nobutora [Nakadai Tatsuya], and his heir Katsuchiyo [the future Shingen; Ikematsu Sousuke] begins to show itself. Katsuchiyo's mother Ooi no Kata [Fubuki Jun] and his protector Itagaki Nobukata [Chiba Sonichi] are both uneasy about it. Nobutora shuns the prudent Katsuchiyo and is affectionate towards his younger brother Jiro (the future Nobushige).

One day, Kansuke is attacked by a group of assassins. The one who sent the assassins was...

There is betrayal in the Takeda and the Oyabashi. Shingen is almost being sent to temple and Kansuke is almost sent to temple. Kansuke's father is acting to save his family in a desperate situation by choosing a second son who looks like a samurai so I guess Shingen's father, Nobutora, is also choosing appearance over ability? But the times are really rough and it seems the farmers don't even have crops in the field. At least in the Seven Samurai they had some crops but that movie depicts the year 1580 I think. But Nobutora must know that there will be a battle between his two sons so he is compelling Shingen to learn how to take the clan by force, in such tough times you need to be strong to survive? But Kansuke was attacked only to scare him or send him a very firm signal to leave so is Shingen also being asked to leave in a nice way, considering the circumstances? I think families sent sons and daughters to various provinces so that at least one son would be on the winning side and survive, in addition to spying?

Concerning the men's hairstyles, I noticed that their heads weren't shaved down the middle and that they wore headgear (eboshi?) only during ceremonies. In YO****SUNE (which was set in a much earlier time period), the male characters almost always wore some kind on headgear with no ponytails sticking out.

With regard to background music, is there a craze in Japan now for the Chinese 2-stringed violin?

Episode Summary

Yamamoto Kansuke [Uchino Masaaki], disappointed that he was unable to serve any lord in his birthplace, returns to Kai once more. There, he reunites with the village girl Mitsu [Kanjiya Shihori] and finds out she is pregnant. Mitsu tells him that it is his child but Kansuke refuses her, saying that she doesn't know who the father is. He gets into a fight with Heizo [Sato Ryuta], who likes Mitsu.

Meanwhile, the head of the Takeda family who had just unified Kai, Nobutora [Nakadai Tatsuya], announces that they will invade Shinano at once. The discontent among his vassals and the people of Kai over the endless battles rises. During this period, his heir Harunobu [Ichikawa Kamejiro], who had just had his manhood rite, is immersing himself in hobbies like waka poetry and continuing his idle life. Itagaki Nobukata [Chiba Sonichi], Harunobu's protector, realizes Harunobu's true intention and tells his mother Ooi no Kata [Fubuki Jun] that he is only playing the role of a fool in order to avoid a confrontation with his father. Itagaki remonstrates Harunobu by challenging him to a match in waka poetry, even though he is not good at it.

At this time, Kansuke is spending his days in idleness in the village, the farmers' carefree way of life touching his heart. He decides to live as a farmer in the village together with Mitsu. By chance, Mitsu encounters Nobutora, who came to hunt deer. Nobutora, irritated that he is unable to catch any game, aims his arrow right at Mitsu.

The Takeda are pretty good samurai since they have the farmers well terrorized and have very good administration and their mansions are immaculate. Nobutora cutting off the heads of error prone vassals can do wonders and he somehow has all his vassals working diligently together so he doesn't want Harunobu to rock the boat with his big ideas since the clan is surrounded by enemies? Nobutora wants to attack his neighboring clan but the main thing is for all the vassals to work together and not fight amongst themselves and certainly not oppose Nobutora's ideas and plans.

Harunobu is defeated when Itagaki's poem is better since it shows he overestimates his own strength and underestimates the strength of others and how much he still has to learn.

Nobutora insists on obedience and will not admit to any personal weakness so he had to shoot his arrow once he drew his bow and aimed then he had to kill what he shot at.

Haranobu is kinda lively by nature. Now that Itagaki has gotten him to stop writing Haiku with the ladies he is looking for something else to do. Maybe drawing his sword on a new vassel is like an initiation ceremony to show that the lord can take a vassals life at any time. Harunobu simply wanted to look at Kansuke and can easily kill him or have him die in battle fighting for the Takeda. But Kansuke may not be much of a team player.

Whoops, that's a typo. I forgot to check my work for errors and ended up just leaving it like that when it's not the correct spelling. Thanks for letting me know of that error.

Heh, that was partly true. I couldn't get into the forums here on Tuesday due to some problem with the URL or something. I also was busy with homework and didn't get a chance to type up a summary. Sorry about that.

Episode Summary

Mitsu is killed by Takeda Nobutora. Heizo, who was in love with Mitsu, cries out for the fall of the Takeda but is admonished by a calm Kansuke. Yet his suppressed thoughts for revenge snap when Itagaki Nobukata, one of the chief retainers for the Takeda, shows up in the village and he assaults him. Itagaki holds Kansuke down but desists from killing him after seeing the expression on his face. Harunobu, hearing from Itagaki about Kansuke, secretly orders to see him as he was also shocked at his father's brutality. This was how Kansuke and Harunobu first met.

Harunobu, seeing the resentment hidden in Kansuke's heart towards the Takeda, persuades him to forgo the hatred and bear ambition instead. Itagaki orders Kansuke to go to Suruga as a spy as he has found out how Harunobu looks like. The purpose was to find out the true state of the internal strife within the Imagawa family. In Suruga, Kansuke informs Ihara Tadatane, a senior vassal of the Imagawa family, about the conspiracy against the current Imagawa family head, Ujiteru and the involvement of his older brother Yamamoto Sadahisa. However, Ihara's response was unexpected... The winds of war in Suruga was approaching.

Okay, I gotta ask because it's been bugging me for some time now...

Why is the show's title here (in this thread) different from KIKU's title of the show?

Why KIKU airs the title Furin Kazan and not Fuurin no Kazan? Too lazy to add the extra letters? What?

Anyhoo, just some random thoughts...

Some people tend to romanize Japanese characters by removing the extra vowels.

Fuurin vs Furin... truthfully, both aren't exactly the correct spelling. The "uu" should be written with a u that has a macron (line) on top of it, which stands for that sound. I'd write it that way if I could, but the message board doesn't recognize that character so I had to compromise.
