Talk about something jetting out from left field . . . did ANYone know this show was coming up (I mean, I saw a docu-preview of this show one Sunday morning on KIKU. I thought they'd plan to show this motha', like, next year or so); heck, did KIKU even know they were gonna get this show at the last minute or something -- unless I'm looking in the wrong place, this "Miyamoto Musashi" program is nowhere to be found on the "Shows" page on this site.
Pretty good. Pretty great, I should say; had the same feeling when I saw "Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" -- true to the story, with a few omissions that were probably neglected due to time constraints.
Any other comments?

Be sure to watch some time until the end of the closing credits. The painting in which the bird flies away is actually one of Musashi's own paintings -- a really nice touch to the show.

Woah. Didn't know that one -- thanks for the info', man.
And holy canolli (Italian-based metaphor on a Japanese TV series; what a country)! Would this (or last) year constitute the umpteenth anniversary of Musashi's death; or birth; or "Book of Five Rings"? Because Viz Comics is up to issue 16 (he be goin' up 'gainst some brotha' named Inshun; battle # deux, specifically) of a title called "Vagabond," story and art by Takehiko Inoue and based on Eiji Yoshikawa's novel "Musashi."

Well, this year would be about the 419th anniversary of his birth, 358th for his death and for the writing of the Book of Five Rings.

Ha. Maybe I should've clarified whether this year marked the 100th, thousandth anniversary . . . you know, one of them numbers ending in zero with a five or zero in the middle. Nonetheless, the aforementioned numbers certainly indicate "umpteenth."
Right on for the 4-11, sistah.

Heh, I figured out that you were asking for a specific year like 500th or so, but I still wanted to post those years up.
But at least we all now know that next year will be the 420th anniversary of his birth though.

so how did everyone like the first episode of musashi? let me tell you how i felt. i missed the the initial showing on tuesday, but i'm glad to see that they replay it on sunday nights. i wish they could do that with other shows, something that kbfd actually does. hopefully we'll see more kiku shows replayed within the week in the future. but that's besides the point.
i know it was the first episode and all, but it kinda left me a little confused. i watched every episode of toshiie and matsu. you know why? because it got me hooked from the very first episode. somehow, the first episode of musashi didn't totally get me hooked. i liked the whole battle with the bandits scene, reminded me of "seven samurai", though. anyways, i'm willing to give it another chance with the next few episodes because i like taiga dramas, so hopefully it'll come out better than what the first episode was. other than that, i think this show has potential to be great. can't wait to see future duels, too. feel free to comment. |

The problem that I see with Musashi is that a whole bunch of characters are thrown at you in jumps. It takes quite a few episodes (I'm watching on KTSF out of San Francisco, and we are up to episode 9 now) to figure out not just who the characters are but what significance they have to the story.
It is a series that needs viewing twice -- and I mean not just viewing each episode twice within a week but rather going back to episode 1 after seeing episodes 1-7, since only then will you know who all the various main characters are and how they fit in the story -- so that you could have made sense of them in the earlier episodes.
But it is still a show I look forward to each week.

I agree. If you just watch the episode once, you'd be left really confused as to what's going on in the scenes they showed. Maybe that's why the ratings for it in Japan aren't that great, as compared to Toshiie and Matsu.

Neat episode (2) tonight. Gee, Musashi -- born fighter, it seems; when you can kick booty in your bibs, well, you are 2 cool.
I think the show MIGHT be overusing the "borrowed from the 'Glory' soundtrack" score a lit-tle too much.
I'm still trying to see what justifies that crucifix metaphor in the opening credits. I kinda see some notions in the first two episodes, but, I hope it becomes even more apparent.
Date Masamune (http://www.samurai-archives.com/masamune.html) up next? Methoughts he was a kinda folk tale hero (first hearing of him in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons' "Dieties and Demigods" manual [OK, The Man is also a nerd; shut up] before checking out the aforementioned site).
All-in-all, so far, this motha's stylish. I can only imagine the reason behind the "low ratings" (as reported in one of the above posts) in Japan is their acknowledgement of how Musashi's also known to a Western crowd. Better yet, maybe the story's played out already, no?
Say it again -- love the show.

| Has anyone actually read Musashi's book 'Book of Five Rings'? I did and for the life of me, I can't understand how to use what he wrote about in the current business world. It seems a bit too cryptic for my tastes. No offense to Musashi but I'd much rather read any of John Maxwell's books on leadership. |

The rating for the first episode in Japan was 21.7%, I believe. It's not exactly a "low" rating, but it's not that great either. (Toshiie and Matsu opened with a 26.1%) I don't know why the ratings aren't what the NHK execs expected, it could be a whole bunch of reasons. Maybe some people were 'spoiled' by watching Toshiie and Matsu and were turned off by the lack luster costumes and actors in Musashi. Or it could be the rumors that had started since the series was first broadcast.

Well, one rumor that ended up being true was that Ichikawa Shinnosuke had a one year old daughter out of wedlock. I think he had to hold a news conference in February to confirm it after the 'rumor' starting spreading. (Without notifying NHK about the conference) Another one was about him and Ronekura Ryoko dating while shooting the series.
The first one actually brought up some criticism in Japan about how NHK chooses their stars in series. They think that a person with an imprudent private life shouldn't be in such a TV drama.

Sigh. Good (or bad) ol' Japanittudes. Funny how a celebrity like that in the U.S. would tend to be on the front cover of every teen magazine and have the # 1 album and movie in the country.
That's entertainment.
Thanks for the info', again.
