Here's an article translated by Anne Chen at http://www.jpopmusic.com/ regarding the second rumor I mentioned.

Original Japanese article at http://www.sanspo.com/geino/top/gt200304/gt2003040401.html

Ichikawa Shinosuke and Yonekura Ryoko dating in Kyoto

Kabuki actor Ichikawa Shinosuke (25) and actress Yonekura Ryoko (27) were spotted on a date in Kyoto, according to April 4th's issue of the gossip magazine, "Friday". In "Friday", Yonekura and her family went to Kyoto for vacation near the end of March for 3 days and 2 nights. During that time, she went to see Shinosuke's Kabuki play at Minamiza. Afterward, they both went to a steak house for dinner and both went to a hotel. According to Yonekura's manager, Yonekura did take a trip to Kyoto with her family, in addition with Yonekura's female stylist. Yonekura and her family just happened to stay at the same hotel as Shinosuke's. The woman at the steak house was Yonekura's stylist. In addition, the manager commented that Shinosuke thinks the stylist as a good friend, but there is not love relationship. Of course, marriage is not even concerned. The two of them have
collaboratively acted in NHK Taiga drama "Musashi" where Shinosuke plays Miyamoto Musashi and Yonekura plays Otsu. In the upcoming episode to be broadcasted on 4-6, there will be scene showing the two of them hugging.

Whoops, I forgot to add this to the last post. This is another article from the same site, but regarding Uchiyama Rina and Tsutsumi Shinichi. (who play Akemi and Matahachi in Musashi)

Original article: http://www.nikkansports.com/ns/entertainment/f-et-tp0-030322-0022.html

Uchiyama Rina denies relationship with Tsutsumi Shinichi

Actress Uchiyama RIna (21) leading her debut movie "sotsugyou" (graduation) met press at a theatrical stage in Osaka City on 3-22. The story is about Uchiyama meeting the father she has never met before at her attending university, played by Tsutsumi Shinichi (38). Not only is Uchiyama acting in a movie, she is also in NHK's time-period drama "Musashi", and TBS's idol drama "Good Luck!!" with Tsutsumi Shinichi. Rumors arises that Uchiyama has some special relationship with Tsutsumi, therefore on Fuji's TV show "itsudemo emi wo!", Uchiyama was shocked to hear such rumor. She doesn't even see Tsutsumi other than times at work. She admits that he's not even her type to go out with.

Yeah, where is everyone else? I'm starting to feel like we are the only people here.

Anyway I finally found a site where I can find the ratings for Musashi in Japan.

Episode 1 - 21.7%
Episode 2 - 19.7%
Episode 3 - 23.3%
Episode 4 - 22.8%
Episode 5 - 21.3%
Episode 6 - 19.9%
Episode 7 - 24.6%
Episode 8 - 20.6%
Episode 9 - 20.7%
Episode 10 - 21.3%
Episode 11 - 22.2%
Episode 12 - 18.4%
Episode 13 - 19.3%

Average rating would be like 21.2% so it's not too bad ... although some episodes do have lower ratings.

Musasahi is pretty good!
i actually found out about it from my dad. he lives in s.f and they were playing the drama on the station there. and then KIKU played the commercial the next day, announcing the series.
a little different from Eiji Yoshikawa's book, but good anyways....

this show is SO good! probably one of my favorite taiga drama's that i've seen. I just love all the fighting and that there's so much action! I liked this one so much better than toshiie and matsu which i found rather boring actually. I mean for most of the episodes that i saw it was more about the quarrels of the samurai's wives. How great is that...-_-
Anywayz...this one really hooked me from the beginning and it just got better in the second episode! and btw, in the end of the episode, does otsu live after she fell? It would be very tragic if they have her die so early on in the series...

if they're following the book, which it seems like they pretty much are, do you think they'll get rid of the hero's love interest this early? otsu is pretty much the only thing, that could distract him from his perfecting the art of war....don't forget to watch tonite!!!!

Yip, yip, watched episode # 3, "Know Your Weakness" (yeah, KNOW YOUR WEAKNESS, SADDAM! While I'm here, may I just say that if the two recent revelations of: 1. Udu's or Ude's [or whatever Saddam's spoiled brat son's namae is] 14K-plated AK-47; and 2. Hawai'i wrestling's own Chief Peter White Wolf -- who's NOT American Indian, but is an IRAQI! -- very credible indication that Saddam's a damn sad meathead both aren't enough to convince you that this recent war was justfied 10 times over . . . man . . . it's back to 4th season "Abarenbo Shogun" shows for you, brotha! Uh . . . anyhow). Still great going so far.

Holy! First the drummer from Tokio (who, with this episode -- or did he mention it earlier? Did I miss something? -- pronounces that HE is Date Masamune . . . man, I think I might need a drink while I'm figgering this one out) shows up, and now that guy from the old "Hotel" series -- this guy who has been more elusive in recent years as Lionel Richie was in the '90s (heck, even NOW too) -- AND the surgeon/son guy from the "Midnight Rain" show appears as a "Sir Toji." The heck is going on? Got EVERYboty's agents working double overtime to get them on this show.

Man, I dunno what'd be worse -- a sharp jab to the throat witha a wooden number or a nice, quick, clean slice from a freshly-minted katana. The stick fighting scenes looked real enough! Kinda makes you wish a suite/sequence'd break out with that priest kicking bvd boy Shinmen T's butt-in-pokey juxtaposed with that "Eye of the Tiger" tune.

Man, Mr. Takezo must be in love w/Otsu . . . not even stopping by -- whilst running at a rate that'd be deemed unacceptable by the old van cams -- to check out the cuty livin' large in the raggedy shack with the cat. Would've made for another great musical interlude (this time with that, "Oh, oh, yey, yey/I love you more than words can say . . ." Leo Sayer, no?).

But I liked this eppie, I likee. A man gets to know (get cozy with, even) weakness(es) to which he won't readily or sanely admit (and, by the way, this is NOT for Saddam) . . . which leaves him only to find his strength.

I figured out that one while on the toilet. Next week, d'en, next week.

Dude, take a pill or something...and CHILL!!!
:-)

I'll leave the analysis of your post to everyone else but I will comment on two of your items:

1. Japan network television, and to some degree motion pictures, tend to draw actors and actresses from a very tight group. That's why you see a lot of the same people.

Based on my work in the industry, it's easier to get your 5 seconds of fame here in the US than it is in Japan. But, if you do some how manage to get it in Japan, your 5 seconds may very well turn into 5 YEARS (figuratively speaking, of course). I kinda associate Japan media careers to that of fads, because once you start gaining a bit of popularity, your agent and casting directors are going to market you like crazy. And you'd be stupid to turn any offers down, no matter how ludicrous or regardless that you haven't slept in months, because once you star starts to fade...that's it, you're done, end of career. Forget about acting classes to improve your skills, once you're gone, you're gone, end of story.

2. That thing with Takezo and Otsu just missing each other by seconds, well, get used to it. In the book, virtually all the characters narrowly miss one other all the time. I know it can be frustrating at times, but that's what makes it such a good story.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, I need to install a computer in the bathroom. I do some of my best thinking while sitting on the toilet, too!

last nights ep. was pretty good.
but a few questions...
1. doesn't sasaki kojiro carry his "drying pole" on his back?
2. i don't remember takezo being trained to fight while in himeji castle....i thought he was in isolation for 3 years with books..plus i don't think he ever left....
-shhot, that takezo & otsu near miss got the heartbeat up a couple thumps. i didn't think they were gonna miss.
makes you think, of people that you miss in your lifetime, because of that split second action....

hey the toilet is pretty much one of the only places you can collect your thoughts anymore in privacy

OH, man . . . don't take this one the wrong way, kids. You know how you write something and, well, based on folks' response (much like here) you kinda' sorta' realize what you wrote? OK, well . . . uh . . . it's actually fair to say that I was actually, uh, STANDING on top of the toilet bowl (shut) while changing the lightbulb in my bathroom. Really. Honestly. And THAT's when I thought of, what I thought of (see above).

Which bring up another scenario: "how many 'Musashi' fans does it take to screw in a . . ."

Zatoichi...you're right, the Drying Pole was on Kojiro's back!

"This Drying Pole on my back has been weeping in its sleep, because not once since it was passed on as a family heirloom has it gotten its fill of blood."

"The Drying Pole screaming over Kojiro's shoulder was a silver snake."

"The end of the scabbard rose high behind him as he drew the great Drying Pole."

Just came back from Honolulu to the Bay Area last night -- feeling much the worse for wear. So it will take me a while to catch up on all the posts -- and to watch the videos of the 2 episodes I missed.

One thing that irked my was when I again was able to watch episode 2 on KIKU (since KTSF showed it a month or two ago). I found that KTSF had axed the historical vignette at the end of that episode.

Of the episodes shown on KTSF before I left, they only showed the historical vignette after one episode. Does every episode have one of these wonderful then-and-now followers on KIKU?

Home for me is the Bay Area.

Reiko, you are one of the most resourceful people around. Those figures on audience segment are really interesting. How many episodes will there be for the whole series?

I'm wondering about why American TV has not caught onto the series idea that is standard fare in Japan. Any thoughts on that? The closest thing on American commercial TV are mini-series, which used to sometimes run 6-8 episodes (Roots, Shôgun) but now seem to be fewer. Of course, Masterpiece Theater on PBS has run a lot of series that go for 13-episode bunches (Poldark, The Six Wives of Henry VIII), so that some of them covered a full year. But even there, the trend is to shorter series.
